How To
Where to Buy Bean Bag Filling in Australia & Internationally
At Mooi Living, we sell premium designer bean bag covers - but not the filling. Why? Because filling is bulky. Even though EPS beans are surprisingly light, they take up an enormous amount of space, which makes freight costs astronomical. It's far more economical for you to pick up filling locally, and in most cases you'll find it at your nearest major retailer for a great price.
To make life easier, we've put together this complete guide covering where to buy bean bag filling in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, and internationally - plus a rundown of the best filling types and some eco-friendly alternatives worth considering.
What Type of Bean Bag Filling Should You Use?
Before we get into where to buy, it's worth knowing what you're looking for. There are a few popular options:
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) Beads - This is the classic, and for good reason. EPS beads are lightweight, affordable, widely available, and supportive. They're the filling type Mooi Living recommends for most of our bean bags.
Crumbed Foam Fill - A fantastic upgrade if comfort is your priority. Crumbed foam is made from shredded traditional foam or memory foam, and it gives your bean bag a plush, sofa-like feel. It's longer-lasting than EPS and less likely to go flat over time. The downside? It's heavier, making your bean bag harder to move around. Foam is also a more eco-friendly option as it's easier to recycle.
A Mix of EPS Beads and Crumbed Foam - Our personal favourite recommendation. The foam eliminates the squeaky, staticky noise that EPS beads can produce, while the beans add a bit of firmness and keep the bag light enough to move. If you're considering foam, we suggest layering foam and beans alternately when filling.
Important note: We do NOT recommend foam filling for outdoor bean bags. Foam absorbs moisture, which can lead to mould and unpleasant odours over time. Additionally, we do not advise using foam for our larger bean bags, as the inner liner will struggle to hold the weight of the foam.
Micro-Beads - Soft and flexible, micro-beads are ideal for smaller bean bags, cushions, and kids' products.
Where to Buy Bean Bag Filling in Australia
Filling a Mooi Living bean bag in Australia is easy and affordable. Here are our top picks:
- Kmart -Our top recommendation for Australian customers. A 100-litre bag of EPS bean filling is available for around $12, and it's noticeably less staticky than filling from some other retailers. Best of all, you can order online and use click-and-collect - highly recommended if you've bought bean filling before and know how awkward it is to lug home!
- Big W - Also sells 100 litres for around $12. Same deal — order online and collect from their dock to save yourself the hassle of carrying it through the store.
- Target — Another reliable option at a similar price point (approximately $12 per 100 litres). Worth checking if Kmart or Big W are out of stock.
- Clark Rubber - If you're interested in crumbed foam filling, Clark Rubber is a great option. Prices start from around $69 for 5kg. A good choice if you want that sofa-like softness in your bean bag.
How much filling do you need? Check the product page for your specific Mooi Living bean bag under the Key Features tab - we list the recommended quantity for every model.

A Special Mention: NZ-Made Eco Options
New Zealand has some genuinely exciting locally-made alternatives that are worth highlighting:
EcoBeans — This is a standout product. EcoBeans are made right in Penrose, Auckland, from 100% plant-based bio-polymer PLA (derived from corn starch and sugarcane). They're larger than standard EPS beads, which means they're more supportive, hold their shape much longer, and require less frequent top-ups. They're non-toxic, commercially compostable, and produce significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional polystyrene during production. If you're an eco-conscious Mooi Living customer in NZ, this is a great option. They ship nationwide. ecobeans.co.nz
Note: EcoBeans are not recommended for outdoor bean bags exposed to prolonged direct sunlight, as extreme heat can cause the beans to shrink.

A useful tip when ordering in Europe: some retailers list filling by weight, but volume (litres or cubic feet) is the more accurate measure of how much space the filling will actually take up. Always check the volume when comparing products.

Where to Buy Bean Bag Filling Internationally
We also ship Mooi Living bean bags to Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and more. Here's where to source filling in other locations:
Singapore & Hong Kong: Lazada and Shopee are excellent platforms for sourcing EPS beads locally, often with fast delivery.
Japan: Amazon Japan is the most straightforward option. Look for "ビーズクッション 補充" (bean bag cushion refill).
All locations: When in doubt, a local packaging supplier or foam wholesaler is often your best bet for bulk EPS beads at a competitive price.
Eco-Friendly & Alternative Bean Bag Fillings
Not everyone wants to go the traditional EPS route - and we love that! Here are some alternative options our customers have experimented with:
Recycled Clothing & Soft Toys — One of our most popular eco-friendly suggestions. Stuff your bean bag with old clothes, soft toys, or fabric scraps and you've got a sustainable, repurposed filling. The main downside is weight - it can make your bean bag quite heavy - and depending on what you use, it may feel firmer than EPS.
One of our customers filled her Komfort Triangle with old clothes and said it was comfortable, just a little firm and on the heavier side.
Dried Beans, Grains, or Rice - This is one we haven't personally tried, but some people swear by it! It's environmentally friendly, adds weight so your bean bag won't move around, and gives a firm feel. Just be aware it won't have the same give and softness as EPS.
Cedar Shavings - Another natural option that's much kinder to the planet. Has a lovely natural scent, though like dried grains, the feel will be firmer.
Hay - An interesting one! Hay is eco-friendly, but you'll want to make absolutely sure it is completely dry before using it. Damp hay in an enclosed bean bag is a recipe for mould.
Our honest recommendation? For most Mooi Living bean bags, EPS beads remain the best balance of comfort, price and practicality. But if you're filling an indoor bean bag and want luxury softness, a mix of crumbed foam and EPS beans is hard to beat.
